If old propane tanks are not disposed of properly, they could explode and injure a worker at the city's recycling sorting facility, officials warn.

CALGARY — Concerned with potential explosions, the city has launched a campaign to educate Calgarians about the proper disposal of propane tanks.
The $130,000 campaign, which includes a large billboard on the Trans-Canada Highway between Calgary and Banff, reminds people not to throw their empty cylinders into their blue recycling bins.
“There’s a potential risk with the propane tank being explosive and flammable,” said Parnell Legg, a waste diversion specialist with the City of Calgary.
If tanks are not disposed of property, Legg said, they could explode and injure a worker at the recycling sorting facility.
Both the city and the union representing city workers said there haven’t been any injuries due to an exploding propane tank.
Don Monroe, president of CUPE Local 37, said there’s a risk.
“We’ve had people sprayed with various things,” he said, noting there have been tank explosions that haven’t injured anyone. “It’s almost time again to educate the public.”
City officials said the campaign is part of an ongoing effort to educate Calgarians about the blue cart program and proper recycling.
The campaign is a great idea, said James Emerson of Green Calgary.
“They do get a number of residential propane tanks,” he said, noting he’s spoken to the sorting facility about the issue. “They can be dangerous.
“Even if it’s empty, it’s still a pressurized unit and it could still contain a flammable gas in there.”
In addition to the billboard, which targets Calgarians returning from camping trips in the mountains, the three-month campaign also includes ads on radio and television, and 8,000 stickers to put on the canisters at retail outlets such as Canadian Tire and Mountain Equipment Co-op.
Legg said it’s important for people to know how to properly dispose of the containers.
“You can recycle them,” he said, “but you need to recycle them in a proper manner.”
The city takes propane cylinders and other hazardous household goods at six fire halls and three landfills.
