December 31, 2004
Dear Colleague in Ministry,
Since the devastating earthquake and tsunami action in South and South
East Asia and East Africa on December 26, The United Church of Canada
has been working to determine the best way to respond to the
overwhelming needs created. We have received responses from some
partners in the region including the Church of North India (which
includes Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Vikas Adhyayan Kendra (India),
Human Rights Advocacy Foundation (South India), and the Institute for
Development Education (South India). We are discussing with them what
needs to be done in the short, medium and long term.
Immediately, drawing on the Mission and Service Fund "Emergency
Response" budget, we will provide funds to partners that request
financial assistance. In addition, we will provide funds to Action By
Churches Together (ACT), the global alliance of faith-based humanitarian
aid agencies associated with the World Council of Churches. ACT has
issued a preliminary appeal for the entire region affected and is
working through its members in the region to address emergency needs
(visit: http://act-intl.org/ <http://act-intl.org/> ). For the longer
term, we will be guided by our partners' needs and requests.
In response to the disaster, we encourage United Church members to
donate to the Mission and Service Fund. If they wish, members can also
make a "supragift" donation on-line by designating "Asian
earthquake/flood relief" in the "Comments" box
(www.strategicprofitsinc.com/unitedchurch/

cheque to:
